The short answer is one to two years on average. The long answer is more interesting, because two clients with the same pigment can fade at completely different speeds.
Why the pigment fades at all
Permanent makeup is not implanted as deeply as a tattoo. The pigment sits in the upper layers of the skin and the body gradually clears it. That is deliberate: it is why brows do not turn blue or grey over the years, and why the shape can be changed when your face or the fashion moves on.
What makes it fade faster
- Oily skin. More active sebaceous glands mean the pigment holds less well. On oily skin the difference can be several months.
- A fast metabolism. The quicker your body renews cells, the quicker it clears pigment. People who train hard usually fade sooner.
- Sun and sunbeds. UV breaks pigment down. It is the number one factor you can actually control.
- Acids and peels. AHA, BHA, retinol and scrubs on the forehead area literally sand the colour away.
- Thin, fair skin. The pigment reads softer on it from the start.
What makes it last longer
- SPF on the brows in summer — the simplest and most effective step.
- Apply acids and retinol so they do not reach the brows.
- Do not rub the brows when washing your face.
- A touch-up at 4–8 weeks — it locks in the result for the whole period.
What fading looks like
The colour does not vanish overnight. First the tone warms and softens, then the outline gets gentler. That is normal and rather convenient: brows age gracefully instead of going empty in a day. When the shape still reads but the tone looks dull, it is time for a refresh.
When you need a touch-up
The first touch-up comes 4–8 weeks after the appointment, once the skin has fully healed. It is not an extra service but part of the result: the first time round the skin takes pigment unevenly, and the touch-up is what evens the tone out. The next refresh usually falls a year or two later, depending on how fast you personally fade.
Can it be made to last forever
No — and that is a good thing. Faces change over the years and so does brow fashion. Pigment that stays forever becomes a problem after a decade, not a convenience.
